BOTOX® COSMETIC
What Is Botox?
It is a purified toxin from Clostridium Botulinum that binds to
nerve endings, preventing stimulation of muscles. The result is
relaxation of muscles and improvement in appearance of wrinkles.
The effect is temporary. It has been approved by the FDA for the
treatment of glabella frown lines in 2002.
What is the procedure like?
It consists of several tiny injections into certain muscles on
the face that cause wrinkles. Discomfort is usually minimal and
brief, and no anesthesia is necessary. The procedure takes about
15 minutes. Most people are able to resume their normal activities.
When will I see the results?
Marked improvement of wrinkles can be noticed in 2 to 10 days.
The effect can lasts from 4 to 6 months, depending on the person
and how much Botox was used. After the effect of Botox wears off,
the muscles regain their activity. Subsequent treatments may need
less of Botox to maintain the desired look.
Are there Any side effects?
Side effects are usually minimal. Slight bruising, redness, nausea,
flu-like symptoms, eye lid droop, and headache might be experienced
temporarily.
Other uses of Botox?
Botox has been shown to be safe and efficacious in other medical
uses. It can help treat hyperhidrosis, strabismus (crossed eyes),
blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), cervical dystonia (involuntary
neck muscle contractions), and headaches. The dosage used, however,
is much higher than for wrinkles
Who should not use Botox?
Botox used not be used on the area where there is current infection.
It should be avoided individuals with known hypersensitivity to
Botox, or those with neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia
Gravis, ALS, and Eaton-Lambert. Botox is also contraindicated
in pregnancy and breast feeding.
Can Botox be used with other
cosmetic procedures?
Yes, Botox is safe to use with other fillers such as Restylane
and Photorejuvenation treatments like Intense Pulse Light. When
used in combination, these treatments can produce even better
results and overall satisfaction.
